Wild living butterflies, whose caterpillars produce a comparatively ethnic silk are very interesting. On the basis of these animals one can imagine how today's overbred silk moths used to live.

The caterpillars of wild living butterflies do not pupate in single separate cocoons but built actual nests out of many connected cocoons. After the butterflies have hatched and flown away, the farmers harvest the left over nests out of the top of the trees, whose leaves the caterpillars ate.

The leaves of different kinds of trees contain various types of nutrients and coloring. Depending on the mixture of the food the caterpillars produce silk in different colors! A high amount of tanning agent in the food for example, results in a dark color of the silk cocoon. Color and quality of the silk depend on the food of the caterpillars as well as on the climate and even on the soil that the trees stand on!
